a walk in the woods

Last month we took a Saturday afternoon and went on a hike at the Eno. This was a big deal for me - it was the peak of my holiday season, and I knew how much I could be getting done at home, or how I could have scheduled a session on this absolutely perfect fall day. Instead, my non-nature-y self went with my favorite boys and we all went on a hike. It was really a hike, too - we had to scale embankments and dried creek beds, and we went several miles through the woods. I had promised myself ahead of time I wouldn't do any complaining. And despite the fact that I let "Blair Witch" thoughts keep entering my head, I kept them all to myself, and we had a wonderful day.

The boys usually go with their dad alone, so they were excited to take me along and show me all of the special things they do. They skipped rocks and found walking sticks while I kept a constant watch on the ground for snakes and other scary and yucky things. I now know why they would always come home from their hikes at the Eno so sweaty and tired. They had a ball, and I loved watching them be little boys.

Could he be any balder?

We were all jumping in this picture, though it is hard to tell here. As you can see, I'm all decked out in my hiking attire - jeans with an argyle cardigan... HA HA HA! (But hey, I was wearing my Chaco sandals - that is pretty earthy for a girl like me.)

They were "fishing" with sticks they found
