taming the beast

And the beast has a name: My Hair

I have tried everything.

Although I haven't gotten any too crazy and gone totally short, I have tried a variety of cuts. Layered, all-one-length, chin length, shoulder length, long-ish, and the Unbelievably Bad, Never to Happen again THINNED OUT haircut. (That one took a year to grow out. About 11 months after The Haircut, Mark looked across the dinner table one night and said, "Wow, they really screwed up your hair, didn't they??" Honestly, they took massive chunks of hair out in an attempt to thin out my unruly mane.)

I've tried every shampoo and conditioner in existence. Aveda and Redken have not done a damn thing for my hair that Suave and Garnier didn't. Although I have to admit to feeling a certain high smelling the crisp eucalyptus scent of Aveda, and even though my hair LOOKS the same, it feels fancy to use nicer shampoo.

I've tried different hair products. Mousse, creamy leave-in deals, straighteners, curl boosters, pomades, gels, and frizz reducers. Why can we put men in space, but no one can figure out a product that actually works for curly hair?

I've tried drying it with a dryer, and not drying it. I've tried diffusers, straightening irons, and regular hair dryers that promised they were "ionic" and reduced frizz. Do you think my hair looked any different? No.

In January I got a "good" haircut. You know, the kind at a fancy place where every girl has her very own room with a door you can shut. I spent more than we spend on a week's worth of groceries, and you know what? MY HAIR STILL LOOKS THE SAME! Even with oodles of "good" products and a fancy haircut done by a hip girl named Monica, my hair is still the insane mop it was before. Then again, maybe my crazy hair is just an extension of my crazy personality.

Here's to another summer in a ponytail:-)

Funny, I have the same problem, and my hair is stick-straight! I think there is a "hair-can-do" gene and I DON'T have it. My hair looks great when I leave the salon, but then I can't EVER make it happen again. Maybe somebody needs to offer classes in "styling your own hair for dummies." Honestly, I was in tears this morning over my hair after spending half an hour with my hairdryer and a round brush. I don't even have a half hour to spend making dinner each day, much less styling my hair! And I know I have a good hair cut, and I have good products, too. Really. Yeesh, who needs it? :)
