tomorrow he'll be a second grader

Tomorrow is Miller's first day back at school. How can he already be in second grade?

The summer was short for my biggest guy. With year round school, their summer breaks are about 5 or 6 weeks long (I guess if I were a little less lazy, I could actually pull out my calendar. But that would take effort.)

While I'll be happy to have a little less ruckus in the house, I am definitely sad to see him growing up so quickly. I remember distinctly learning how to spell "transportation" in second grade. Spelling was always my strong suit, and I had a perfect 100% record on my Friday spelling tests until one week in 5th grade where I screwed up and forgot to put a question mark at the end of a sentence instead of a period. I was D-E-V-A-S-T-A-T-E-D. (And believe me, I could have easily spelled devastated.) I'm still weird about spelling. Especially on printed materials or websites. It is called SPELLCHECK, people. But I digress.

He'll be in second grade with his new big boy permanent teeth, and his size 3-almost-4 feet, and his size 8 jeans since he outgrew his size 7's over the summer. (They are now capri pants on him.) Last night I realized that he comes up to my collar bone. My days of being taller than all of my kids are numbered.

So here's to Miller on the eve of 2nd grade. May he survive another year with his arch nemesis, Lewis. We found out tonight at the all-school potluck that they were put in the same class this year, after being separated following a rather tumultuous kindergarten year. Pray for me.

Could we just freeze this moment? On one hand, I want to see Miller as a grown up, (I really want to take him to Europe, Boston, NYC, and perhaps the Splash Zone one more time) but on the other, I'd like him to be a 2nd grader forever.

Sigh....
