sixmonthiversary
Six months ago today, we moved. Into this crazy, weird, old house that had a not-us kind of smell and all kinds of strange quirks. A house whose landscaping was (and still is, for the most part) non-existent. One with no more bedrooms than we had before. It felt like we were a little crazy, moving into this house with a multitude of issues. I thought it would NEVER feel like home.I was wrong.
It totally feels like home. I like the squeaky wood floors. I don't mind the small master bathroom (I'm not really a bathroom person... who needs to spend that much time in the bathroom??) I love that I have extra cabinet space in the kitchen, and I love that we have a separate family room and living room. I love the size of the yard, and one day I hope we'll have it all landscaped. (An SUV-sized pile of mulch was delivered to us today.... we're replacing that super chic white rock - GAG! - with mulch and bushes/plants/flowers.) I love having a garage, which is really the most surprising thing, since I was always very non-opinionated on the garage concept before. It has made the whole coming -home-by-myself-late-at-night thing much less nerve-wracking. Mark appreciates that I don't have to call 15 times on my way home from girls' nights out making sure he's awake and watching to make sure no one gets me in between the car and the door.
And I love that we've taken the house that the neighbors gave up on, and made it loved. I love that the boys have room to run, and we're not stuck on a postage stamp-sized lot, arm's length to our neighbors.
I do not love all of the screaming that has been going on in the house lately, but that is fodder for another post:-)
Because I know you're wondering, still on our to-do list:
- paint our bathroom & replacing the mirror/light fixture (that will be happening soon)
- landscaping the yard (this is Mark's domain... crossing my fingers that the wheels are in motion now)
- painting Miller's room, our room, and all of the main living areas. I'm stuck on color choices for our room and the main living areas, but Miller's room is going to be painted a battleship gray color... perfect for a boy who likes to rest his dirty feet on the wall when lying in bed
- changing out all doorknobs in the house, because they are barfy brass (what was up with all of the brass!?)
- and about a gazillion other boring things, like removing dead trees, replacing the sunroom roof, and replacing the front doors.
(Sorry, kids, when it is time for you to go to college we'll remind you of that super retro split-foyer we bought in 2007.)
