working his way down the list

I really thought we might not make it past the first game.

Miller decided that soccer was not the sport for him, and asked us to sign him up for baseball this spring. Despite my best telepathic efforts to get him to change his mind because we all know that soccer outfits are way cuter/cooler than baseball outfits, he was excited about playing and we signed him up at 11:59 pm on the last day of registration. Unlike other kids who start playing t-ball as soon as they are out of diapers, my son - oh he who was born to a mother who could best be described as athletically-challenged - is 8 and had never played. I didn't want him to feel like the worst one. Like someone else I know, someone who stood in the outfield and prayed that the ball wouldn't come her way. (I like how this is all about me, don't you?)

Anyway, the first game was a disaster. He didn't get a hit, and he left the game SOBBING. He was convinced that he was bad luck for the team and that he was the most horrible 8 year old baseball player to ever step on a field. I was (silently) ready to let him drop out then and there... I have better things to do than re-live my self-esteem crushing softball days. But he pressed on and at his next game, hit the ball every time he was up (this is a coach-pitch league, so that definitely helps his odds.)

He seems to be enjoying it, and has declared that he'll play until he's 12. Alrighty then. Sports mom I begrudgingly am:-)

gretchen - i'm right there with you in the RELUCTANT sports mom thing. fortunately, in my son's league ( 5-6 coach pitch) they don't keep score ( officially that is). when asked how he did - i simply reply -he ran around & got tired and he said he had fun- that's all that matters!!

hang in there - s

Um, I think the title I'd be going for it "HOT Sports Mom."

The University of North Carolina Tar Heels Baseball team is eagerly awaiting the arrival of Miller as their new star!!! After all somebody will need to help the "Heels" return to Omaha and the College World Series!
